Shanna Barnicle, Biology teacher at Rice, has been chosen by the Lake Champlain Basin Program to spend a week this summer on their research vessel learning hands-on science activities that she can bring back to the classroom here at Rice. The WATR Partnership provides selected teachers with an immersive year-long professional development program related to watershed science and water quality issues. Ms. Barnicle was selected from hundreds of teachers for this program. She will gain research experience working alongside UVM faculty, staff, and crew preparing her to re-imagine teaching rooted in place. Her hope is to create learning experiences that are outside, local, and relevant to students living in Vermont.
We are thrilled that Ms. Barnicle, like many of our teachers, takes the time to develop her skills as an educator and bring innovative, interesting, and hands on experiences to her curriculum.
