Campus Ministry Efforts to Benefit from Newly Endowed Fund
Rice is pleased to announce the creation of the Matthew William Geiger ‘91 Faith in Action Fund at the Vermont Catholic Community Foundation. Matthew’s parents, William and Edwina Geiger established the fund in their son’s memory to help fulfill one of the central tenets of the Rice mission, serving others.
While a student at Rice, Matthew was a four-year varsity member of the Rice basketball team and an active member of the Campus Ministry community. His deep faith, community service, and mission trips inspired Matthew’s choices later in life. He graduated with a double major in history and religion from the University of Vermont, and eventually earned a Masters of Divinity at the University of Chicago and Doctor of Ministry from the Virginia Theological Seminary. As a high school teacher, Matthew devoted his career to the spiritual development of young people. Matthew passed away at 43 from cancer in 2016.
The activities of the Rice Campus Ministry Office will be funded in part by the Matthew William Geiger ‘91 Faith in Action Fund. A Commitment to Service Award in Matthew’s name is also given at graduation to a male and female student who embody Matthew’s spirit of service. Photos of Matthew will hang in the Rice Campus Ministry office recognizing this generous legacy and encouraging our students to make service a priority in their lives.
Contributions to the Matthew William Geiger ‘91 Faith in Action Fund can be made at any time. Contact Christy Bahrenburg in the Rice Advancement office at 862-6521 ext. 200 or email@example.com for more information.
